Charu Suri on Her Jubilant New Song, "A Little Joy"
Updated: Mar 1
"A Little Joy," the new song by the amazing and multi-talented composer, songwriter, and jazz pianist Charu Suri, reminds of the importance of finding happiness in the little things that happen in our everyday lives. See what she has to say about this beautiful song below.
1. What can you tell us about the song?
A Little Joy was composed during the pandemic, in October 2020. I kept scrolling through news headlines and felt more depressed each day, and kept thinking, when will all this end? So I stopped reading the negative news for a bit, and focused on things that brought me joy, and that’s how this song was born. That’s all I wanted: a little joy.
2. What was the process of creating the song?
I actually started doodling with the melody on the piano, adding layers of harmonies, and even put it out to my listeners on social channels. I then listened to it again, and simplified the melody, and enhanced the harmonies, adding more diminished chords (I LOVE diminished chords: give me an ice-cream sundae and diminished chords for dessert, I often say), and ended the song with a classic jazz second chord that is reminiscent of one of my favorite composers, Vince Guaraldi.
I also owe a debt to the classic holiday songs, “Christmas Time is Here” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” These songs bring me evergreen joy, but particularly more so during the holiday season. I wanted to write something of that caliber.
3. What was the most surprising thing about the process?
How effortless it really was: the song came out in minutes, and it was heartfelt. I just wrote the lyrics in one go and it was done!
4. If you had to dedicate the song to someone, who would it be and why?
To all those who helped during the pandemic. This song is dedicated to the healthcare workers, servicemen and women, the postal workers, restaurant workers etc. who risked their lives for everyone during the pandemic.
5. Where does the new release fit into the timeline of your musical journey so far?
It drew a lot of praise from critics and fans who said it was on the caliber of Have yourself a merry little Christmas, and Christmas Time Is Here (unsolicited) so that was so rewarding to hear for me. It is also my first original holiday Songbook tune, a nice prelude to the full-length Songbook album I’m planning on releasing later this year.
6.. What can fans expect next, musically or otherwise?
A holiday Songbook album, another single, a raga jazz album and a New Age album!!
7. What do you do when you're not making music?
Playing with my daughter, writing, and baking! I love to bake.
