UK based singer/songwriter Liam Sullivan takes listeners on an eerie and emotional ride in his new single, "Be Kind". Inspired by travel and the tribulations of true love, the song is both haunting and comforting, dark and hopeful. "Be Kind" is a musical montage of introspection and feeling that you will surely want to add to your "crying in the shower" playlist.
1. What can you tell us about the song?
The song was written whilst travelling around Europe, it uses imagery of dark cityscapes and vast natural landscapes to reflect the light and dark within relationships. It also explores the idea of taking responsibility and not just acting a certain way because the other person does things that you don't like.
2. What was the process of creating the song?
As I mentioned, the lyrics were written whilst travelling, specifically I can remember being on a bus in Austria and watching all the different landscapes go by and being inspired by that. I had the verses to the song for a long time before the chorus found its way into shape. This is also one of the first songs I wrote on my piano which I feel really expanded my melodies.
3. What was the most surprising thing about the process?
I think the fact that writing on the piano opened up a whole new world to me of actually taking the time to figure out new and interesting melodies that I may not have come up with when I was just writing on the guitar. These days I always use a mixture of the two when getting songs down.
4. If you had to dedicate the song to someone, who would it be and why?
My girlfriend Laura, as the song is about her and the trials and tribulations of making a relationship work.
5. Where does the new release fit into the timeline of your musical journey so far?
I have been writing and playing music for just about half my life now. I was in many different bands before releasing my first solo E.P. 'Restless' in 2016. I then released my next E.P. 'The News I Needed' in 2019. Since then, I have released a string of singles, my last one 'When This is Over' received an overwhelming reaction from listeners as it was about the strange times we are living in right now.
6. What can fans expect next, musically or otherwise?
I have a lot of material in the bank, ready to go. My plan for this year is to release new music every 6-8 weeks and really try to gain some momentum, this is some full band stuff and some stuff I have recorded on my own. Lots of new music to come!
7. What do you do when you're not making music?
I am a 3rd Dan Black Belt in Kickboxing and in normal times I teach a lot. Kickboxing and gigging was my life before the current situation. These days I just play a lot of guitar.
8. Where is the best place to find you online?
All of my back catalogue can be found on Spotify under Liam Sullivan. I also have a lot of live videos etc. on YouTube under Liam Sullivan Music.
