Madison, Wisconsin based hip hop artist Marcus Porter's newly released song "Soup for the Soul" is a perfect song to put on...well, anytime. Equal parts comfortable and engaging, the melodic hook and heartwarming message will both stick in your head all day. An insistent beat supports Marcus's confident flow drives the song forward, while a twinkling piano part and insistent yet shuffling beat lends the song a subtle dreamlike quality. We recently spoke to Marcus to see what he had to say about the song. See our conversation below.
1. What can you tell us about the song?
My song Soup For The Soul features a unique beat that brings both chill and energetic vibes. The song has a catchy hook and many intricate flows in use. I put wisdom in my bars that will be relatable but also speak to your heart, mind & soul and will give you and everyone in-between a push to reach for greatness they possess.
2. What was the process of creating the song?
It started with the melody being created first in a 4 bar loop with the horns, keys, bells, and bassline then I started mumbling to myself. And soon enough the chorus came of it saying “I am the soup for the soul, I am the soup for the soul” then I wrote my verses then built the song fully and recorded it. I know its an interesting process and each song I made is built differently. I just start with the melodies first, the only constant thing.
3. What was the most surprising thing about the process?
That it seems like I used a lot to build this but didn't and it still so wide and and crisp
4. If you had to dedicate the song to someone, who would it be and why?
The people, my family, friends, fans. The song is about being soup to the soul so anyone who’s willing to listen and let me in to help however I can.
5. Where does the new release fit into the timeline of your musical journey so far?
It's the start of the journey because this is the first official release under my actual name instead of my inialts. And since I am creating it all from scratch you get everything I am feeling and putting into the song.
6.. What can fans expect next, musically or otherwise?
A few more releases (songs, videos, content) maybe some merch too
7. What do you do when you're not making music?
I am usually watching anime or some type of tv or traveling but since corona I tend to just watch tv, read, or hang with the lady
